Lent, Day 14: GOD'S WONDERFUL WORD FOR US

Scripture:   Psalm 19

Focus on the Word

What communicates to you the glory of God?  David of ancient Israel looked to the heavens and realized that the cosmos itself was telling the glory of God.  The incomprehensible expanse of the heavens was declaring for all the world to see that they were the works of God.  They never said a word but in their silence they declared the glory of God.

The God who created the heavens and the earth is with us today.  All around us is His glory.  Who He was then is who He is now.  That same cosmos is still telling the glory of God.  For us, as for David, God is at work.  God is here speaking His life- creating Word into the world in which we find ourselves, into our very lives as well.  What was said of God then is what we say today:

  • The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul.
  • The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
  • The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart.
  • The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.
  • Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever.
  • The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair.
  • They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold.
  • They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.
  • They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.  (Psalm 19:7-11, NLT)

God is present in all His glory not simply to set a universe into motion but to draw near His creation and breathe His very life into all He created.  By His life we can live in a fullness that could only be perceived in the infinite imagination of God.

In Lent we slow down, look up into the heavens, and know again that God is here.  As the earth is surrounded by an infinite universe, so we are covered by an infinite, redeeming, and creating God who is worthy of our praise.

Be still, look up into the heavens some night, remember who God is and who you are.  Look, and be astounded.  Look, and marvel.  Look, see the Master Artist behind the work.  Look and live.

Today’s Prayer

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”    (Psalm 19:14, NIV)
